How To Make Butter With A Mason Jar

Really I just wanted to show off the fancy new butter dish I got for Christmas. Kinda looks like a
Samurai helmet.  Here's how to make the butter, or just click "read more".

Ladle the cream off the top of some fresh cow's milk and put it in a mason jar (about half full).

Shake the hell out of it.  This time it took almost a half an hour,
but I am sure if you let it warm up first it wouldn't take that long.

When it looks like this you are done shaking.

Strain off the buttermilk.  I make bread with it but you can drink it too.
It tastes much better than the sour stuff you buy at the grocery store.

Fill a bowl with ice and water.  Form the butter into a ball and gently knead.  If it gets too soft, roll it in the ice water.  Keep kneading and rinsing with cold water until the last of the buttermilk is gone.

Roll it into a log with plastic wrap, pinch the ends.  Throw it in the freezer or fridge for a little
bit and you are done.  The milk I get from the folk's at Avery's Branch Farms
makes some delicious butter.  The Jersey cow's milk has a lot of butterfat.
